Michael Löhr
the class develops from plain and pure body-work / work-out exercises, through short floor- and standing combinations into more complex choreographic sequences. some of the basic principles which are constantly worked with are: finding, strengthening and shifting the center, being on and off balance, resting and exploding into space, moving expansively and taking risks. the class is very physical, energetic and athletic but it also focuses on increasing the physical awareness in order to be able to work within a frame in which one can push his individual limits but keep the body safe. michael wants to encourage the participants to take their own decisions in order to find their own way of playing with quality, musicality and dynamics so that ideally the physical actions can become the source for a theatrical act.
michael löhr studied contemporary dance at the cologne university of music and dance. he subsequently received a scholarship from the goethe institute to visit the annual summer academy in kyoto, japan. later that year michael joined germany‘s tanztheater bielefeld under the direction of gregor zöllig. during his engagement he was part of six creations and re-stagings by zöllig as well as collaborating with different international choreographers, such as lionel hoche and jo strømgren. in 2007 he became a member of the repertory company nordwest / tanzcompagnie oldenburg where, among others, he worked with jan pusch, ingun bjørnsgaard and guy weizman & roni haver of club guy and roni. in 2009 he decided to move to berlin in order to start working as a freelance dancer, choreographer and teacher. since then he has been involved in various projects including collaborations with ahn eun-me company (south korea), clint lutes‘ death by glitter (usa | germany) and emanuel gat dance (israel | france) as well as giving classes for dock11, marameo, pvc tanz freiburg heidelberg and others.
