Momentum and Acrobatics in Contact-Improvisation
In this workshop we cross CI techniques with other approaches to elaborate a flowing and dynamic dance with our partner, made of entrances and exits, level changes, smooth lifts, jumps and displacements through space.
A pedagogy based on the awareness of the breath, and on fine-tuned perception of weight transfers, allows us to build up three-dimensional movement pathways with sensitivity and precise body awareness.
Using our perception of the space allows us to wider the connection we have with our partner : through musicality and rhythm in our improvisation we embrace the pleasure of dancing, composing the moment, breathing in and out of contact with effortless flow.
During the workshop we will discover how lifts can be understood as a smooth weight transfers between two connected centers ; that falling can be experienced as a simple change of system ; and that weight and connection can be shared without contact, by becoming sensitive to our partner's intentions... Using momentum, inertia, gravity and counterbalance we can enter into complex patterns with grace and lightness.
So if you like to fall together, fly and flow, flip and jump, and lift each others with ease - we will give you the possibility to discover various ways of playing with the momentum, using it as an energy resource to feel, enjoy, create and sweat ! :D

« …My dance is drawing inspirations from contact improvisation, bodywork, authentic movement- and voice, BMC, yoga, aikido, OSHO-meditations, breathing-techniques… For me is important to root my expression and inspiration into my inner state, and my emotional body. From inside out. Finding the balance between being and doing, technique and form, and on the other side sensing-feeling-intuition… Of course all these elements are connected, in flow. In my technique i tend to use lot of momentum, suspension, bounce, falling, off balance, breathing, natural spirals of the body, and letting the technique rise from the use of these principles.
For me dance is not « just movement ». It is deeper expression of our being. Capturing part of our souls. Effortlessness. Like water. Like wind. Like nature is. Soft. Not forcing the river through the stones. Breathing spine and soft strength. Listening the moment, waiting in stillness. Flying like a dream in the air. »
Charlie Fouchier is born in Paris (France). He started Breakdance when he was 17 years old, and through the years diversify his practice and knowledge of dance and movement. In 2009 he graduated from the CNDC (Centre National de la Danse Contemporaine) as a Choreographic Artist. As a dance interpret, he has been working for many choreographers in Europe (Laurent Chétouane, Johann Kresnik, Yoshiko Waki, Aina Alegre, Stephane Fratti…). His experience includes Contact-Improvisation, Contemporary, Ballet, Tango and Capoeira dances, as well as Judo and Qi Gong. Since 2009, he has been teaching Contact-Improvisation in various cities and festivals in Europe.
“I always was interested in growing my sensations and my understanding around the human body, always exploring and tasting the pleasure I have dancing, touching and entering in connection with other people’s body and emotions. I find it important to integrate notions that are used in somatic methods or on stage in my teaching. Increasing the body awareness, opening space perceptions, experiencing your presence through the presence of your partner, making choices through your dance… are notions which I use and strew in my teaching of Contact-Improvisation.”
