"Endlich siehst du diese hässlichen, schlecht gemalten Augen. Du beurteilst sie. Sie verschwinden nicht. Du hörst auf, sie beurteilen zu müssen und sie verschwinden trotzdem nicht. Und dann sehen sie zu dir zurück. Sie verschwinden nicht. Und vielleicht, aber nur vielleicht, verliebst du dich."

Monster Mechanism ist ein Work in Progress, das aus der Zusammenarbeit von Sherwood Chen (US/FR) und Yuko Kaseki (JP/DE) entsteht. Vom unheimlichen Tal in die Terra Incognita experimentieren sie mit Brüchen im System, der Devolution in der Evolution, den Spannungen zwischen Phobie und Anziehung. Heimische Aliens geraten in eine endlose Verschiebung. Billige Imitationen eines unbekannten Nationalismus.

"Finally you have to see those ugly, mispainted eyes. You judge them. They don't go away. Then you stop bothering to judge them, and they still don't go away. And then they look back at you. And they don't go away. And maybe, just maybe, you fall in love."

Monster Mechanism is a work in progress collaboration between Sherwood Chen (US/FR) and Yuko Kaseki (JP/DE). From the uncanny valley into terra incognita, we taste fractures in systems, devolution in evolution and tension between phobia and affection. Domestic aliens falling in endless suspension. Cheap imitations of an unknown nationalism.

YUKO KASEKI (JP / DE) is director of company cokaseki, choreographer, Butoh dancer, performer, improviser and teacher in Berlin since 1995. She has been involved in various projects with musicians and visual artists. She performs in solo and ensemble pieces and improvisations throughout Europe, Russia, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentine, Australia, India and the USA. These works are physical performances that incorporate Butoh, performance, object design, texts and soundscapes. International collaborations include inkBoat (SF), Tableau Stations (SF), CAVE (New York), Poema Theatre (Moscow), Salad Theater (Seoul) and more. She is also a key collaborator with mixed ability artists including Theater Thikwa (Berlin), Roland Walter (Berlin), Sung Kuk Kang (Seoul) and Zan-Chen Liao (Taipei). www.cokaseki.com

SHERWOOD CHEN (US / FR) has worked as a performer with artists including Anna Halprin, Xavier Le Roy, Min Tanaka, l’agence touriste, Sara Shelton Mann, inkBoat, Ko Murobushi, Grisha Coleman and Liz Santoro. He co-founded the dance collaborative Headmistress with Oakland-based choreographer Amara Tabor-Smith. He has lead movement workshops internationally in-studio and in natural and urban landscapes in places including Ménagerie de Verre (Paris), Oficina Cultural Oswald de Andrade (São Paulo), Independent Dance / Siobahn Davies Studios (London), Centro Nacional de las Artes (Mexico City), Chez Bushwick (Brooklyn), Arlequi (Banyoles) and EDEN / Dock 11 (Berlin). For over twenty years, he has contributed to Body Weather research initiated by Tanaka and his associates.
