Day of the innocents [enter The Martyr]

Leyya Mona Tawil empfängt verschiedene Berliner Künstler als Gäste: die MusikerInnen Frank Gratkowski, Hilary Jeffery, Julia Reidy und die TänzerInnen Manuela Tessi, Yannis Karalis und Irene Cortina Gonzalez. Für diese Musiker und Tänzer hat sie ihr früheres Stück 2 π r neu angelegt und The Martyr entwickelt. Die Arbeit begann in Detroit und soll als Multi-City-Projekt 2017 Premiere feiern. Das Thema des Stücks ist der Klang: der Klang der Arbeit, des Krieges; von Kriegern und Abeitern. "Day of innocents" im DOCK 11 ist nun ein Durchlauf dieser Idee und soll ein Vergebungsritual darstellen. Den ersten Schritt vom letzen. Den letzten Schritt vom ersten.

Tawil is joined by a cast of Berlin-based artists: musicians Frank Gratkowski, Hilary Jeffery, Julia Reidy, and dancers Manuela Tessi, Yannis Karalis and Irene Cortina Gonzalez. Tawil enters this new work, The Martyr, by applying her 2 π r  score for dancers and musicians. The Martyr began in Detroit, and is a multi-city project that will premiere in 2017. It is ultimately about resound: the work, the war, the warrior, the worker. This iteration at Dock11, Day of the innocents, is a ritual of absolution. The first step of the last. The last step of the first.

Rekolan Satu - The Fairytale of Rekola

Es war einmal... ...sie zog in die Welt hinaus, um ihr Glück zu finden... ...Kikirikiiii! Unsere schmutzig Jungfrau ist wieder hier.... ....und sie musste ihre strahlend roten Schuhe anziehen und tanzen bis sie umfiel... ...und wenn sie nicht gestorben sind, dann leben sie noch heute.

Diese Work-in-progress-Vorstellung zeigt ein Stück, welches Tomi Paasonen gerade gemeinsam mit der Tänzerin Satu Rekola erarbeitet. Ihr Vorname Satu ist Finnisch für "Märchen"; Rekola eine kleine Stadt in Finnland. Der Ausgangspunkt des Projektes ist, autobiographische Elemente aus Satus Leben aufzugreifen und sie in fantastische Figuren, fiktionale Traumwelten zu verwandeln und bewegliche Landschaften im Raum zu erschaffen. Finnische Wörter und Sätze werden immer wieder wiederholt und bilden eine Fantasiesprache jenseits von Bedeutung. Bewegungen werden synchronisiert, um ihre Interpretationen in eine andere Welt zu verschieben. Die lakonische finnische Kleinstadtrealität wird mit wunderbaren Fabeln und wilden, imaginativen aber unverständlichen Geschichten vermischt. Hinreißend roh, beunruhigend naiv und unvorhersehbar verrückt.

Once upon a time… …she ventured out into the world to find her fortune… …Cock-a-doodle-doo! Our filthy virgin is here again… …and she had to put on her red glowing shoes and dance until she fell dead to the ground… …and they lived happily ever after.

As part of this shared evening, we will show a work-in-progress presentation of a solo piece that Tomi Paasonen creates together with dancer Satu Rekola. Her name Satu means in Finnish ‘fairytale’. Rekola is a small town in Finland. The point of departure for the project is to take autobiographical elements of Satu’s life and turn them into fantastic figures, fictional dreamworlds and construct kinetic landscapes into the space. Finnish words and phrases are repeated to formulate a fantasy language beyond meaning. Movements are synchronised to shift their interpretations into an otherworldliness. Laconic Finnish small town reality is mixed into fabulous fables and wild imaginative but not understandable stories. Adorably raw, disturbingly naive, and unpredictably freaky.

Eugenia Arsenis, Director – Dramaturg, Ph.D in Philosophical Aesthetics, has collaborated with international cultural organizations (Royal Albert Hall, San Francisco Opera Center, Center for Contemporary Opera, Skylight Music Theatre, Oakland Opera House, Greek National Opera, Megaron Athens Concert Hall, National Theatre of Northern Greece etc). She is the Dramaturg of the Center for Contemporary Opera. Coordinator and Dramaturg of the Experimental Stage of the Greek National Opera from the beginning of its inception (2004-2011). For her performance Mendelssohn’s Antigone, which she directed and adapted at the Royal Albert Hall for the BBC Proms, Eugenia Arsenis was honoured at the Antikenfestspiele in Trier. Holder of numerous scholarships. Speaker at international conferences. She has taught Directing at the Department of Theatrical Studies at the University of Peloponnese, Opera at the Department of Music Studies at the Ionian University, Acting for Opera at the National Conservatory and she is the designer and coordinator of the Minor in Theater and Performance at the Hellenic American University. She also coordinates the Melodrama School (Acting for Opera) of the Athens Conservatory. Dr. Arsenis studied Dramaturgy and Directing at the Department of Drama, Theatre and Media Arts at Royal Holloway University of London. She pursued her postgraduate research in Philosophy (University College London) and her Doctorate in Philosophical Aesthetics, Opera and Greek Tragedy at the University of London (RHUL). She was Visiting Researcher at the School of Music of the College of Fine Arts at Boston University for Musical Analysis and Opera Directing. Moreover, she studied Film Directing at the New York Film Academy. She was trained over fourteen years in the theory and the performance of music and she studies dance until today. She was a Board Member of the National Theatre of Northern Greece (2010-2013). She is a Board Member and Registrar of Public Relations of the Hellenic Theatre Studies Association and a regular member of the Greek Directors’ Guild and the International Theatre Institute. www.eugeniaarsenis


Dionisis Christofilogiannis (b. 1973, Greece) Lives and works in Athens.
Graduated from the School of Arts of Cluj Napoca in Romania. Founder of DL Projects and artist/coordinator of the White House Biennial.Solo shows has shown at the Muzeul de Artă Cluj-Napoca, Nakagawa Gallery Tokyo and in Athens. Recent group exhibitions have included “The Kennedy Bunker” in Berlin curated by Nicos Charalambidis (2014), “Uber-Bodies” at Hydra School Projects (2014), “The Red and White flag Project” parallel on Biennale4 Thessaloniki (2013), “SelfConcious” curated by Sotirios Bahtsetzis (2013), “Civilisation (genres and cases)” curated by Alexios Papazacharias (2013). He has also co-curated several exhibitions, including the “In the Studio” at Kunsthalle Athens (2013), “I fought the X and the X won” at the National Museum of Malta and Romania (2011), “The Cutting Edge” in Romania (2011). In addition to having exhibited widely in Greece and internationally, ha has also worked as set designer in Romania National Theaters of Timisoara, Cluj Napoca, Braila with Razvan Mazilu and in National Theater of Athens with Robert Wilson.


Yannis Adoniou, the renowned artist was born in Athens, where he received his first formal dance education at The State School of Dance and later at John Neumeier's Hamburg Ballet School in Germany. Since 1998 he has been leading in San Francisco the critically acclaimed arts organization, KUNST-STOFF productions, co-founded with Tomi Paasonen and In 2010 he founded KUNST-STOFF arts, a studio/art space located in downtown San Francisco, designed to host performing and visual artists from around the globe. Adoniou works in dance, film, opera and takes active roles as a curator, producer, and educator. Adoniou has frequently been in collaboration with nationally known composers, and visual and media artists. His production, “Rebetiko-ρεμπετικο”, on the music of Minos Matsas sung by Catherine Clambaneva, received critical acclaim and toured in the USA and Europe. Adoniou was a principal dancer with Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet from 1993-1998 and a regular guest artist across the USA and Europe. In addition to his work with KUNST-STOFF Dance Company, Adoniou has created works for companies and Universities such as Seattle Opera, Sacramento Ballet, Bonn Ballet, Opera Santa Barbara, the Modern Department at the University of Utah, West Bay Opera, West Edge Opera, and Lines Ballet/Dominican University, among others. Adoniou’s works has been commissioned and presented by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, ODC Theater, CounterPULSE, Dock11 Berlin, Burning Man, Herbst Dance Festival in Heidelberg, Germany, Dance Forum Monaco, Dimitria International Dance Festival, the Athens International Festival, and Ballet Frankfurt, among others. He earned the first place award at Sacramento Ballet’s capital choreographic competition for his creation, “Gomidas Songs”, based on the music of Gomidas Vardabet, and has received support and acknowledgement for his work as a dancer and choreographer from the Isadora Duncan Awards, Irvine Foundation, Dance/USA, 2005 Goldie Awards, San Francisco Arts Commission, MANCC national center for choreography, and the Gerbode Foundation, among others.
