Magic Valley

Magic Valley

----------

Views of an imaginary civilization of three figures, in a journey of attachment and survival against the backdrop of a world destroyed.
A journey of three characters through an evolutionary study of an “instrument” with which they develop a language of a unique and magical quality. Manipulation by fine strings fulfills a chronology of refined interactions. Discovering co-dependence reveals their inner world with images of beauty and dreams, while “the instrument” transforms from a tool of creation into an instrument of destruction. Can we heal ourselves by reflecting our violent fantasy in parallel worlds? With detailed movement, sound and video installation, Magic Valley mirrors humans gift of imagination. Illustrating the power of images, the delicate balance between beauty and danger and the faith we seek in our circle of life and death.

Maya Lipsker is a Berlin based choreographer, dancer and teacher who began her independent work in 2004. She created 16 pieces since and is highly active as a teacher in Germany and Europe. Maya danced 3 years in BatSheva Ensemble Company (IL, 2000-2003) and collaborated with choreographers such as Lara Barsacq, Sasha Waltz, Ohad Naharin and Arkadi Zaides to name a few. As a choreographer she received residencies in Berlin (Dock11, Labor Gras) amongst others and was commissioned to create pieces all over Europe.
Maya's work presents narratives evolved from/by movement, a personal and rich physical language, details and musicality. In the past four years Maya's interest in instant composition (/ improvisation) has developed theoretically and practically and has become a significant part of her creation process, integrated in her choreography and performance. Her work exists on the border between reality and fantasy while reflecting on radical human conditions related to solitude, environmental impact and relationships. At the same time, the work aims to have a quiet strength, leaving space for poetic resonance and limitless imagination.

Roy Carroll a composer / performer born in Dublin, currently living in Berlin. He has collaborated extensively with Maya Lipsker presenting work around Germany (Freiburg, Greifswald, Görlitz, Chemnitz, Heidelberg) and Europe (Prague, Rome, Athens, Salzburg, Berlin, Dublin). Roy is currently working on commissions for Icebreaker (UK ensemble), Benjamin Dwyer (Irish guitarist), Prey Woodwind Trio and Dublin Guitar Quartet. He is the recipient of numerous awards and grants including Composer’s Bursaries, Project Awards and Commissions from The Arts Council of Ireland. Roy holds an M-Phil in electronic music and composition from Trinity College Dublin.

PRACTICE
Roy's primary instrument for composition and performance is the digital sampler which he approaches as an 'electro-acoustic' instrument. In 2009 he began to work directly with loudspeakers removed from their cabinets, manipulating them and 'preparing' them with various textured materials, resonant objects etc. In addition to their function as outlet for audio from the sampler, the loudspeakers become acoustic sound sources in their own right. Working physically with the loudspeakers, Roy provokes kinetic / acoustic interactions between the speakers and the (mostly salvaged) materials.

Sandra Lolax was born and raised in Vaasa, Finland. She started her dance studies at Kuula-institute in Vaasa and continued her dance education at Balettakademien in Stockholm. Since her graduation in 2007, she has been working freelance as an artist with her base in Vaasa and Berlin.
Sandra has worked as a dancer with choreographers as Carl Knif, Mia Malviniemi, Stina Nyberg, Rosalind Goldberg, Marcela Donato and Anne Mareike Hess. She performed in the work Nijinsky by director Miriam Horwitz in Berlin 2010. Sandra participated in the Solo Performance Commissioning Project by Deborah Hay in 2010. The solo Art and Life will premiere in Vaasa, Finland in spring 2011.

Together with Stina Nyberg and Rosalind Goldberg, Sandra is an initiator of Weapons of Mass production, a project about finding new methods of creating dance and choreography that took place in residency at The modern dance theater in Stockholm in June 2010. Weapons of Mass Production will develop into a performance with estimated premiere in Berlin in July 2011.

Sarah Marguier
studied costume and art at Les Arts décos of Paris during 4 years. Through an exchange program, she studied at The School Art Institute of Chicago, where she met Conrad Hamather, a plastician artist, and followed his courses. She then collaborated with Hamather, developing her designing orientation and her artistic concept of costumes and materials. Her work focuses on the concept of reused materials, the traces and souvenirs left by objects, and the creative freedom that is found in organic forms and the life around them. Worked as a costume designer for Redmoon Theater. Created her own piece Dead Family, which performed at the Quay Branly museum in Paris.
