A parallel to incidents of our lives and a metaphor for “endless peripheral borders and continuous circles of love and war” Secret Journey, Tipping Utopia to Dead End is based on a story which moves along without any concrete incident and still, nobody knows…

Directed by Yoshiko Chuma, The School of Hard Knocks’s journey has crossed paths with Peter Pleyer, Stephanie Maher and Agnė Auelytė for 30 years – mountains of correspondence, a nightmare of miscommunication, frayed emotions, botched promises and culture challenges.

Following Yoshiko Chuma’s lifetime obsession with the mythology of danger/border/immigration, a journey of dance, music, and interview has been assembled. Documentation is intentionally confused with history and segments from past work are recreated in the investigation of unique movement vocabulary, which invites each performer/dancer to offer alternate perspectives on rhythmic expression. Performers/dancers interact, but not directly.

Yoshiko Chuma (conceptual artist, choreographer/artistic director of The School of Hard Knocks) has been a firebrand in the post-modern dance scene of New York City since the 1980s, has been consistently producing thought-provoking work that is neither dance nor theater nor film nor any other pre-determined category. She is an artist on her own journey. A path that has taken her to over 40 “out of the way” countries and collected over 2000 artists, thinkers and collaborators of every genre since establishing her company The School of Hard Knocks in New York City in 1980.

The School of Hard Knocks, founded in 1980, is a collective of artists from diverse backgrounds and different art forms under the Artistic Direction of Yoshiko Chuma. Its purpose is to create, perform, encourage, and sponsor experimental and multi-disciplinary collaborative work. The School of Hard Knocks was conceived as an ongoing phenomenon – it’s shape as diverse as the situations the company performs in. Over the course of the company’s history, more than 5,000 people have performed under her direction in situations ranging from theatrical dance concerts to street performances, parades, and large – scale spectacles in the U.S., Europe, South America, Asia,Middle East and Africa. Some former members of the School of Hard Knocks include since 1980, Sasha Waltz, Meg Stuart, Sarah Michelson,Peter Pleyer, David Zambrano, Stephen Petronia DD Dorvillier, Jodi Melnick and many other artists.
